Mrs Saroj Bishnoi has been diabetic for more than 20 yrs, Type 2 Diabetes has been a bane in her life for that long.“Your entire life is controlled by the disorder”, she shares. Eight months back Saroj had a Body Mass Index of 35, she had severe hypertension and uncontrolled diabetes. “My physical activity got curtailed when I accidentally slipped in my bathroom and ended up getting a hip fracture. I was bed ridden for 2 years. This duration affected by health greatly and I ended up putting on a lot of weight. Moreover my diabetes also became uncontrolled. I was taking more than 100 units of Insulin every day and still my sugar levels were extremely high.
Distressed with her weight issues and compounding diabetes situation, Saroj started walking and opting for yoga exercises. But her situation didn’t improve.“It was so difficult to stretch yourself on the mat,” she shares.
Fortunately, Saroj heard someone discussing ‘Bariatric Surgery’. She and her daughter in law were now determined to know more about it. Her daughter and daughter in law followed up and cross checked the information. “Every positive feedback was strengthening my decision to opt for Bariatric Surgery. So we all decided to consult a specialized surgeon for the same,” shares Saroj.
She says that the consultation with Dr Rajat Ahluwalia, Consultant Bariatric Surgery, Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon was a blessing. “ It was like I was talking to my son. I could share my feelings, my fears and apprehensions with him. He understood everything. I had made up my mind to go for it.”
According to Dr Rajat Ahluwalia, “Obese people who have Type 2 diabetes for less than a decade have very high chances of reversing diabetes after Bariatric Surgery. Bariatric Surgery can also help in controlling Diabetes in patients who have been suffering from it for a longer duration as in her case. Her HbA1c was more than 9 before surgery indicating extremely poor sugar control inspite of taking more than 100 units of insulin everyday. Post surgery her insulin requirement gradually reduced and her sugar levels returned to normal levels. Her HbA1c came down to 6.4 and gradually her insulin injections were stopped by her endocrinologist and she was put on oral hypoglycemics”.
Today Saroj is free from insulin injections for more than 8 months and walks without using a walking stick and her Blood Pressure is also better controlled.“I am 100% healthier and being lighter suits me, “ she shares while smiling.
You ask her what’s on her list now, “A special meal with my angels – my daughter and daughter in law, who searched the best doctor, best surgery and ensured that I live my life to the fullest again!”
