Working in the corporate sector can be stressful. The pressure not just affects your mind but also your body. For Mr Vipin, Sr Accounts Manager in a reputed MNC firm in Gurgaon, it was the same. His new job responsibilities were taking a toll on his health. “They say that with power comes responsibility. As I was getting new job assignments, I never shied away from long working hours. It’s the same, everyone puts in today to have a better tomorrow.” However his health soon started speaking, he began experiencing chronic neck pain. “I could not move. It was as if my entire neck was jammed. I went to a local physician, applied the pain ointments, took hot cold bottle treatment, but the pain persisted. It was as if my body was punishing me.”
As days passed, the neck pain continued and Vipin started experiencing numbness in his body. “It started in the tips of my right hand fingers. I thought it’s just the cold and ignored it. The worst was when the ‘No Feeling’ spread to the full palm of the hand. I was scared and shocked.”
Vipin and his wife consulted numerous doctors, neuro specialists and went through a number of diagnostic tests. However, all were inconclusive in highlighting the underline cause of chronic neck pain and spreading numbness. Just when they had lost all hope, Vipin decided to consult a doctor in AIIMS, New Delhi. Vipin went through an MRI which clearly showed a tumor in his brain stem. “The thought that I am suffering from cancer was devastating. I had huge personal responsibilities. I blamed my profession and my persistent ignorance of opting for specialized care. Had I gone to an AIIMS level neuro specialist earlier, could my situation been better? At AIIMS the doctors suggested us surgery, however due to inavailability of the date the same could not be provided immediately. We started to talk to people; everyone just suggested one name – Dr. VS Mehta. Since I live in Gurgaon, I was aware of his repute, so we decided to come to Paras.”
According to Dr (Prof) VS Mehta, Padma Shri, “Vipin had a Brain Stem Glioma. The brain stem is the important part of the brain and controls the major functions of the body. The brain stem has an important function of coordinating and conducting nerves impulses and sensations. The conventional treatment for such a tumor is usually radiotherapy and chemotherapy; however we chose surgery as the treatment protocol. Surgery in such a case is complicated as the tumors are deep seated and precision is required. This is the reason most neurosurgeons avoid to operate on a Brain Stem Tumour as it is risky and requires exceptional surgical precision. We used the latest Image Guided Brain Tumor Navigation Technology to pinpoint the exact location of the tumor. The surgery is assisted by live ultrasound and MRI Imaging.”
He further adds, “We always suggest a treatment plan that would benefit the patient the most. Surgery as a procedure ensures that the root of the disease has been removed from the body. At Paras, we have successfully removed hundreds of deep seated tumors. Surgical precision along with technology ensures that the patient gets the best. In Vipin’s case also radiotherapy and chemo would have unnecessarily prolonged the treatment and would have cost the family also a lot. It should be the Endeavor of every neurosurgeon to perform neurosurgery to provide exceptional results to the patients suffering from Brain Stem Glioma.
Vipin’s probability forecasting was right, and as today he walked in the hospital for a follow-up visit he can’t stop thanking Dr. V S Mehta. “This episode taught me a lot. First – not to ignore your health, Second- you care for yourself to be fit to care for your family and Third- Trust the great minds at work like Dr. Mehta.”
