52 year old Ramendra Singh was successfully treated at Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon for Colon cancer by performing the complex CA Recto Sigmoid Surgery. The technique is performed at few surgical cancer centre in Delhi NR and requires exceptional medical expertise. A diabetic for the last one decade, Ramendra had a healthy lifestyle. Morning walks and a balanced diet dominated his life. However, he started to notice heavy blood flow in his stools.
“I thought it could be because of less roughage or water in my diet and kept ignoring the same. However, despite making some dietary changes, the issue continued to persist. Hence I decided to consult a gastroenterologist to understand the complication,” shares Ramendra. A few tests – digital rectal examination (DRE), proctoscopy, colonoscopy, stool occult blood testing and diagnosis revealed that Ramendra had colon cancer and required immediate surgery.
“Being diagnosed with cancer means getting prepared for eminent death. My family was totally shaken. And each day we started to lose hope. Meanwhile one of our family friends recommended that we consult the best doctor and get specialized treatment for the same. We consulted Dr Vinay Samuel Gaikwad after numerous positive recommendations from friends and colleagues.”
According to Dr Vinay, “Ramendra had a malignant colon cancer and we gave him preliminary medication treatment to ensure that the bleeding stops. However we informed him that surgery is the only treatment modality for him. We recommended CA Recto Sigmoid Surgery and also informed him that the best way would be to completely remove the colon. Colon cancer is the sixth most prevelant cancer in India and it most common in patients that have a family history of cancer, a personal history of cancer or colorectal polyps, lynch syndrome, Crohn Disease or ulcrerative colitis. It can also occur if the patient is a chronic smoker, alcoholic and obese.”
Dr. Vinay adds, “ Common signs and symptoms associated with colon or rectum cancer include – blood in stool, change in bowel habits, diarrhea, constipation, frequent bloating and gas, weight loss, vomiting, and tiredness. It is important that one doesn’t ignore the signs and consults a specialist at the earliest. Ramendra was suffering from Stage III Colon Cancer and we recommended the complete removal of the colon to ensure that the malignant cancer doesn’t spread to other organs.”
Ramendra went through three surgeries in which his colon and malignant tumour was removed. Today after 3 months of the surgery he is feeling back in shape and is healthy. “Dr. Vinay was not just my cancer specialist but my guide. He constantly motivated me and ensured that I never lost hope. It was his concern, positive attitude, motivation that worked along with his treatment. Today I am a survivor who is charged to fight cancer and overcome it at all costs. I thank Paras and the cumulative team of Dr. Vinay Gaikwad.”
