Darbhanga: Mr Umesh Roy, 60 yrs old came to the hospital complaining of severe chest pain and breathlessness. He was diagnosed with suffering from Heart Attack by the emergency officer. On request, the cardiologist on call, Dr. Jyoti Karn, Consultant Cardiology, immediately attended to the patient and performed the life saving primary angioplasty procedure.
Mr Umesh, a teacher from Samastipur, was brought to the hospital by his sons who work in the Indian railways. According to them, “Samastipur is a big district; however the same lacks tertiary care facilities. As soon as my father started to complain of pain in the chest we took him to the nearby nursing home close to our house. However when we say his situation deteriorating, we realized that he needs assistance from an expert and a tertiary care specialized hospital.”
At Paras Hospital, Darbhanga, Dr. Jyoti with his specialized procedure saved the life of the teacher. According to him, “Primary angioplasty is an emergency treatment for a heart attack. The aim of any heart attack treatment is to clear the blockage in the artery as quickly as possible. It is performed through the femoral route (from the artery in the groin) by inserting a catheter and a tube. Through the same a balloon is inserted in the blockage to clear the passage for the blood flow. Every second during a primary angioplasty counts as each second of loss of blood and oxygen flow kills thousands of heart muscles thereby causing irreversible damage to the heart.”
He further states, “This is a specialized technique that is performed at select hospitals in Bihar and infact Paras Hospital, Darbhanga is the only hospital in Mithilanchal to have a cath lab through which the same can be performed. Today we are witnessing a rise in cardiac disease and heart attacks. According to recent reports 1 person dies every 33 seconds because of a heart attack. India is currently witnessing nearly 2 million heart attacks a year. A number of lives can be saved if the right treatment is delivered , by the right expert at the right time. In cardiac patients time is of essence and Paras understands the importance of specialized clinical care practices in the same.”
Mr Umesh Roy is now stable and set to get discharged. He and his family is thankful to the medical team and doctors of Paras for giving him a new lease of life.
