An exceptional team of neuro surgeons of national and international repute together treated 38 yr old for a rare and complex spinal injury – Hangman’s Fracture. Rohit Nagpal was suffering from severe pain, discomfort and the inability to turn his neck and head after sustaining injury to neck. Post surgical intervention, today he is able to lead a normal life.
“Around 6 months back I met with a major accident. My bike collided with a 4 wheeler and it was a head on collision. I suffered numerous injuries and was recommended bed rest. My reports suggested that I had a Hangman’s Fracture – An injury mainly occurs from falls, usually in older adults, and motor accidents mainly due to impacts of high force causing extension of the neck and great axial load onto the second vertebra of neck. The result of the injury was extensive on my mobility and couldn’t move my head or neck in either direction and used to also suffer from back pain. I tried to cope up with physiotherapy, hot cold treatment and other alternative therapy methods however nothing seemed to work, until someone suggested Dr (Prof) VS Mehta,” shares Rohit.
With an extensive experience as the Former Head of Neurosurgery at All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and Chairman of Neurosciences Centre at Paras Healthcare, Dr. Mehta is regarded as an institution and a veteran in the field of neurosurgery. Dr. V S Mehta is an eminent neurosurgeon and one of the few doctors who have received awards like the Padma Shree and the Life Time Achievement Award (ASSOCHAM & 6th MT Awards). Dr (Prof) VS Mehta recommended Dr (Prof) Sumit Sinha, Director Neurosurgery, Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon to take the lead and treat Rohit.
According to Dr (Prof) Sumit Sinha, an accomplished doctor from AIIMS New Delhi and a reputed surgeon for spinal injuries and brain tumor surgeries, “This particular injury of Hangman’s fracture is a highly complex injury.Such injuries need immediate medical attention and any delay can lead to permanent disability and health issues. Post radiological examination of Rohit’s condition it was concluded that the injury requires fixation with screws”.
Dr (Prof) Sinha performed a screw fixation of first & third neck vertebrae to provide Rohit the proper spine alignment. Post surgery he was admitted for 5 days and was supported with physiotherapy care. Today after a month post surgery, he is back to his normal schedule.
“I am able to stand properly and rotate my head and neck. Though I haven’t started to drive again but there is no physical issue that can deter me from doing the same. Earlier I thought that I would be crippled at a young age of 38 yrs, but now thanks to the exceptional guidance and treatment of Dr (Prof) Sumit Sinha, I have got a second chance. I shall forever be indebted to him, “ shares Rohit.
