Paras Hospital Gurgaon Dementia Clinic has identified and is treating more than 100 patients with dementia in just eight months since it was started. This is a record number for one hospital is such a short time. The patients came to the specialised clinic from all parts of Delhi NCR. The Dementia Clinic is headed by Dr Vijay Chandra, Senior Consultant in Neurology, an expert in the field of dementia, memory disorder and Alzheimer’s disease with more than 35 years of extensive clinical experience.
According to Dr Vijay Chandra, “Over the last few months we have received a mix of patients with dementia. However the surprising finding is that Levy Body Dementia is more common in our experience that Alzheimer’s disease which is most common globally. The second and third most common causes were depression and “mild cognitive impairment” respectively.
There are important implications of these findings. Doctors should be aware of Levy Body Dementia as it responds very well to medication which other types of dementias do not. Also patients have a tendency to fall down and sustain serious injuries. Depression is becoming more common in our experience. This suggests a breakdown in the traditional social family bonds within families which existed in the past. Also Mild Cognitive impairment is an early stage in dementia and suggests that there is increasing awareness of dementia among patients and families, and they are seeking medical help earlier in the course of the disease.
Dr Vijay also highlights, “Today more than 4 million Indians above 60 years suffer from dementia. Sadly we as a country are to recognise and act on the approaching epidemic of dementia. The metropolitan cites that show a rising trend in their old age population should be more prepared to tackle the upcoming geriatric health issue. The signs and symptoms of dementia are usually ignored or misdiagnosed as being senilety in old age. However it is important that we take charge and consult specialists.”
According to the documented research of more than 100 patients that Dr Vijay Chandra is treating suggest that the need of specialised doctors and care facilities is even more. Today in this fast paced world people have less time and patience, thus complicating both the diagnosis and management of patients.
Appreciating the hard work, clinical excellence and the dedication of Dr Vijay Chandra , Dr Dharminder Nagar, Managing Director, Paras Healthcare shared, “ Neurology care for dementia is a specialised stream of medicine that requires patience and intellect. We congratulate Dr Vijay Chandra for developing the Dementia Clinic at Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon.”
