For Vikas Rastogi, 26 yr old, cricket was everything. His strong ambition to be a cricketer and to be a part of the international team was all be could look forward to. Despite attempts and due to some personal reasons he had to abandon his ambition and give up Cricket. Worldly responsibilities and the requirements of the family business burdened him further.
As time passed he started to slip into low and down mood episodes. He started feeling disturbed, perturbed and ill all the time. His interest in the family business also started to fade and he became occupied with his bodily ailments. Many consultations with numerous doctors from Delhi, Mumbai to Bangalore proved to be futile. They started to question if this issue was psychological or Physical.
Just when Vikas and his family were losing hope, they decided to consult Dr. Vikas Kumar, Consultant Clinical Psychology at Paras Patna. Dr. Vikas Post consultation and some test concluded that Mr. Rastogi was suffering from Somatoform Disorder and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Traits.
According to Dr. Vikas, “Somatoform disorder is the mental illness that causes bodily symptoms, including pain. The symptoms can’t be tracked back to any physical cause. And they are not the result of substance, abuse or another mental illness. The important aspect to know is that people with Somatoform disorders are not faking their symptoms. Also Vikas Rastogi had some fears of losing control and focus over situations. Over a time period of 8-9 years he had gone into chronic phase which was affecting his personal and professional life adversely.
Dr. Vikas adds, “In order to treat the patient we needed the 100% involvement and the commitment of the patient. Mr Rastogi was very helpful and compliant. We went through various sessions of Cognitive- behaviour therapy, behaviour modification and mindfulness techniques. Motivation and Encouragement are the best moral boasters. As soon as he started to improve, his family started to appreciate him, this motivated him more.
Today after months of psychological therapy, mindfulness, and cognitive behavior technique, Mr Rastogi is a changed Man. He is confident, independent and above all has a smile on his face.
The right advice, with medication and psychotherapy, can work wonders for every patient with depression and other Psychological disorders. Every 1 in 5 people in India are prone to suffer from depression anytime in their Life.
