For 43 yrs old Poonam Kumari, being patient with herself paid off. Usually patients bear the brunt of not going for surgery at the right time and due to the delay their situation usually gets more complicated. For Poonam, not going for the surgery and taking the right treatment from specialised doctor not just saved her the pain of going through an unnecessary surgical procedure, it also saved cost and reinstated the faith that she had in
doctors. For the last 2 years Poonam had been suffering from severe pain in the lower abdomen. She was also suffering from leucorrhoea – a whitish , yellowish mucus discharge was coming out her vagina. Along with the same, her ultrasound reports highlighted that she had a bulky uterus, inflammation of the neck of the womb (cervicitis), pelvic inflammatory disease along with a left ovarian cyst. This cyst along with the other multiple conditions was complicating her situation. She consulted numerous doctors and each onesuggested the removal of the uterus – they advised hysterectomy.
“The word surgery translates into fear for life. We are simple people living in a small town, for us a surgery also means cost, long stay in the hospital and possible immovability for life. I am responsible for my house and my family. Just like an lady, I am expected to neglect my own needs and look out for my family. I explained my condition to numerous doctors to treat me medically, however, each suggested only surgery. The removal of the uterus also means a lot to a woman, ” shares Poonam.
Demotivated she had accepted her fate. However, through a medical outreach program spearheaded by Paras Darbhanga, Poonam happened to consult Dr. Jyoti Maskara, Consultant Gynecology. A specialist in treating infertility and has expertise in vaginal and abdominal hysterectomy. She also specialises in managing patients with abnormal uncontrolled bleeding, gynae oncology cases such as ovarian and cervical cancer. Post diagnosis and understanding the issues hampering the medical treatment, Dr Jyoti decided to take the challenge.
“For anyone surgery is a big decision. People not just in India but also living abroad get hassled as soon as they are recommended surgery. Poonam’s case was a typical one highlighting neglect. Women usually tend to put their health and their requirements on the back foot. This practice is most prevalent in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities such as Darbhanga. Medically she was suffering from Endometrial Hyperplasia – It is a thickening of the lining of the womb, caused by overgrowth of the cells that line the womb. It is not cancer. But in some women it can develop into womb cancer if the treatment is not provided at the right stage. We took the challenge of treating Poonam medically. We also assured her that continuation of the medication is of prime importance,” shares Dr Maskara.
Dr. Maskara treated the patient for 3 months and today her medical exam is clean. ” Her ultrasound and other investigations are encouraging. There is complete resolution of her left ovarian cyst. Moreover her pelvis and cervix have no infection and the Endometrial Hyperplasia has been cured. It took time, patience and also the absolute cooperation of the patient to come to this stage. The most important aspect is that Poonam doesn’t have to go through menopause and associated side effects such as osteoporosis , urinary symptoms , weakness of muscle and body , depression, anxiety , falling hair and many more. She can now lead a healthy life,” shares Dr Maskara confidently.
For Poonam, it is a new life without pain, disease and suffering. ” The trust that I have in medical science has been restored by Paras. God wanted me to have a chance , so they sent his angels in white coats. Thanks to Dr Jyoti ! I owe my painfree life to her,” shares Poonam with tears of joy and gratitude.
