A 59 Years old patient from Karnal, Haryana was admitted in Paras Hospitals, Gurgaon with severe complaints of low backache, non-radiating pain which was not associated with numbness and tingling sensation, weakness, vomiting. The pain got aggravated on standing and walking in taking a few steps only. The patient had serious difficulty in walking and was mostly bed ridden.

The clinical problem started with a seizure attack in the month of August 2017 in Karnal. After the treatment of seizure in Karnal, the patient started developing the problem of forgeting things which indicated towards alarming signs of dementia. The patient also started complaining of serious back pain. He made a decision of  visiting Paras Hospital, Gurgaon and consulted Ex Prof AIIMS, Dr. Sumit Sinha, Director, Neurosurgery and Spine for further evaluation and management. He also consulted the Senior Dementia specialist, Dr. Vijay Chandra for the neurology problems.  After the multiple consultations and investigations including MRI, it was diagnosed that the patient was having L3-4, L4-5, L5-S1 degenerative changes with L3 collapse.

Dr. Sinha counselled the patient and the family for the minimal invasive spine surgery as without surgery he wouldn’t be able to walk for his entire life. There are still a lot of myths looming around spine surgery among the patients, doctor had counselled them about the results and advantages of MISS where patient will not have a big scar and can walk and continue with the routine work after couple of days of surgery.

Patient underwent L3 Kyphoplasty with percutaneous L2, L4 transpendicular screw and rods fixation done through minimal invasive procedure. In this minimally invasive surgical procedure, bone cement is injected into the collapsed L3 vertebrae; which gives strength to the damaged spine bone, thereby minimizing patient’s pain. Also four screws were inserted through 5 mm skin incisions, for supporting the weak spine. The patient underwent the procedure well and was able to walk immediately after the day of surgery. It was a painless procedure.
