Hospital’s specialist, Dr. Abhishek Bose shares, “Kidney patients should get their AV fistula formed as soon as the serum creatinine exceeds the normal range. AV fistula is completely different from piles. Many a time patients confuse it with a fistula caused by piles. Recently we had to create a fistula for the Rajad Supremo because of his kidney disease.”

Dr. Bose adds, “Patients come not just from Mithila and north Bihar but also from Patna and other nearby districts to get their AV fistulas formed at Paras Global Hospital. An AV fistula is created in the arms of a patient. For right-handers, it is created in the left arm and for left-handers, it is done in the right arm. During the formation of a fistula, a vein and an artery are connected. It is created under the skin in one’s arm. An AV fistula stands for Arteriovenous fistula. Its surgery takes an hour to get over. In case a fistula is not formed, the veins do not receive enough blood which causes problems during dialysis. Hence, its formation is extremely important. Patients should prevent lifting heavy objects from the hand with a fistula; they should not get their BP checked from the same hand and should also not get any vaccination done in the same arm. The fistula generally creates a whooshing noise and patients must get used to it. The sound can be heard even through a stethoscope. Patients must take special care of their eating habits and must stick to the diet recommended by their doctor. They must also regularly get their BP and sugar checked and make sure they stay under control. Apart from this, they must get a Hepatitis B Vaccination.”
