Paras Global Hospital, Darbhanga, has achieved a significant milestone in orthopaedic care by successfully performing the first-ever Shoulder Hemiarthroplasty (Partial Shoulder Replacement) in the Mithilanchal region. The landmark procedure restored mobility and relieved pain for a 75-year-old woman, marking a major advancement in access to advanced joint replacement surgery in North Bihar.
The elderly patient sustained a severe shoulder injury after a fall at home and was diagnosed with a complex fracture of the proximal humerus. The injury caused intense pain, complete loss of shoulder movement, and left her unable to perform routine daily activities. Owing to the complexity of the fracture and her advanced age, she was unable to receive definitive treatment locally and was referred to Paras Global Hospital, Darbhanga.
Following a detailed clinical and radiological evaluation, Dr. Gyan Ranjan, Senior Joint Replacement Specialist, recommended Shoulder Hemiarthroplasty, as the fracture was too complex for conventional fixation. The case was particularly challenging due to the patient's age, underlying cardiac comorbidities, and the need for early rehabilitation to prevent prolonged disability.
The surgery was completed successfully in approximately 60 minutes, during which the damaged humeral head was replaced with a prosthetic implant, restoring the stability and anatomy of the shoulder joint.
The patient recovered well without any major complications. She experienced significant pain relief, gradually regained shoulder function through rehabilitation, and was discharged on the eighth postoperative day in stable condition with advice for physiotherapy and regular follow-up.
Speaking about the case, Dr. Gyan Ranjan said, "Shoulder hemiarthroplasty offers excellent pain relief and functional recovery in carefully selected elderly patients with complex fractures. Careful planning and precise surgical execution helped us achieve an excellent outcome despite the patient's age and existing heart condition."
This pioneering procedure establishes Paras Global Hospital, Darbhanga, as a regional centre for advanced shoulder replacement surgery, enabling patients across Mithilanchal and North Bihar to receive world-class orthopaedic care closer to home without travelling to metropolitan cities.
